A Verbier resident of some 20 years, Canadian born Jesse Cohen (far left) scouts a line off Mont Fort, which crowns the Four Valleys ski region. Jesse started out in Verbier fitting ski boots for a living to sustain his love for backcountry skiing. He now has Swiss residency and lives in Levron where he’s raised his family. Most residents of Levron continue the
centuries-long tradition of raising hérens. Also known as ‘fighting cows’ for their tough spirit, hérens produce the milk used in Switzerland’s famed raclette cheese. At 6am, cheesemakers arrive at Verbier’s Laiterie (dairy) to start making raclette. Locals herd cattle into barns in the
evening to keep them warm. Set at 4,183ft, Levron is fairly exposed and remains somewhat remote from civilisation. Those living here who aren’t involved with dairy farming must descend a seemingly endless series of hairpin bends along the one road into the valley to reach their offices and workplaces.
