THE CENTURIES-OLD SWISS TRADITION OF TAKING CATTLE TO GRAZE IN HIGH-ALTITUDE SUMMER PASTURES HAS BEEN RECOGNISED BY UNESCO
In November 2023, UNESCO added Switzerland’s Alpine pasture season to its Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. Local families have been bringing their cattle, sheep and goats to graze at high altitude since at least the late Middle Ages. The practice has remained largely unchanged despite being passed down mostly informally, from one generation to the next.
