WHAT’S NEW

Up and running The resort of Kandersteg is known among visitors to the Bernese Alps for its gem- coloured lakes, forested peaks and Gemmi Pass, which has been used since Roman times. Now, it’s carving out a niche for trail running with some of the country’s finest paths, including two new itineraries showcasing the village from its loveliest angles. Heading up to 5,740ft, the circular Üschenen tour is a 10- mile, heart-pumping challenge, while the 6.6- mile Gurnigel route will see you climb 2,830ft through the Gastern Valley, ending at the three Arvenseeli lakes. Recharge at Restaurant Ritter, which has been serving locals in the village centre for more than two centuries. meine-berge.ch

Hut to hut Originally opened in 1969, Rifugio Doss del Sabion in the Italian town of Pinzolo has a new glow following a makeover in summer 2023. It has elegant Alpine interiors and a restaurant serving farm-fresh, creatively interpreted Trentino cuisine, as well as views of the rocky turrets of the Brenta Dolomites and Val Rendena. Hikers can hitch a lift up to this mountain refuge on a revamped 10-seat cable- car, designed to slot seamlessly into the natural environment. It’s all very stylish, but don’t forget your boots and backpack: the refuge is a springboard for hikes to nearby huts, such as the challenging three-hour stomp to 8,166ft Rifugio XII Apostoli via Passo Bregn de l’Ors. dossdelsabion.it
