SNAPSHOT Ramauš, Lig, Slovenia A few years ago, I started documenting small carnival-like celebrations in remote Slovenian towns. Known as Pust, this millennia-old tradition, which celebrates the coming of spring, was almost lost because of disapproving church leaders and, later, a socialist regime. Locals have since revived it, and it takes on different attributes depending on where you are. Around the village of Lig, in the Julian Alps, it’s called Liški Pust and features bakreni, masks made out of metal sheets. Locals wear them to personify folklore monsters; as the parade progressed, I was blown away by the enthusiasm with which they played each character, such as Ramauš, pictured in this shot.
