Growing tired of seeing the same four walls every day? Sam Lewis reveals the on-trend colours to paint your home for the summer season

B

lue and green are emerging as this year’s most fashionable colours. T ere's a growing trend

towards painting homes in restful, reassuring and refl ective shades that ground, inspire and connect residents with the great outdoors — perfect for the summer months. Farrow and Ball colour curator

Joa Studholme says, “As we become increasingly environmentally aware, we crave a connection with the colours of nature, so deep ‘duck green’ and earthy, organic ‘sap green’ feel perfect for the home in 2020.” She adds that ‘duck green’ is ideal for rooms typically used to relax in at the end of the day. British paint manufacturer Little

Greene has similar predictions of the go-to shade for 2020. Marketing director Ruth Mottershead says, “Green is currently really popular. It’s the true colour of nature, a shade we associate with the tranquillity of the outdoors. From earthy, muted tones, such as ‘boringdon green’ and ‘ambleside’, to the bold brightness of ‘sage & onions’, the shades are both elegant and reassuring.” T e company, which has worked in

collaboration with the National Trust since 2018, off ers a selection of 31 greens, including 20 National Trust- derived shades. T ey can be used

either in isolation or combined with colours such as blush pink. Dulux has gone in a similar

direction, selecting a cool green — ‘tranquil dawn’ — as its Colour of the Year 2020, with recommended palettes drawing on complementary greens, blues and greys. Pantone, meanwhile, has gone

a slightly diff erent path. T e self- described ‘global authority on colour’ has selected the timeless ‘classic blue’ as its much-anticipated Pantone Color of the Year for 2020. According to Leatrice Eiseman,

executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, the boundless blue, reminiscent of the sky at dusk, is imprinted in our psyches as a restful colour that personifi es peace and tranquillity. “It highlights our desire for a

dependable and stable foundation from which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era,” she says. “We’re living in a time that requires trust and faith. It’s this kind of constancy and confi dence that’s expressed by ‘classic blue’.” While the calming colour is ideal

for bedrooms, its refl ective tone also encourages concentration — meaning it works well in a library, den or home offi ce.

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF COLOUR

Blue: Calming, soothing and relaxing, it’s ideal for dens, lounges, bedrooms and bathrooms. Yellow: Energising, warm and uplifting, yellow is a good choice for the kitchen or bathroom if you tend to have problems waking up — but beware, overuse can cause fatigue and anxiety.

Green: Restorative, calming and comforting, green is a natural stress- reliever and is an ideal choice for bedrooms and living rooms. Red: Need a boost of passion, creativity or energy? Go for red in a bedroom or lounge —but remember, the colour can increase blood pressure and heart rate.

Orange: Stimulating, motivating and energetic, it’s perfect for social spaces such as lounges or dining rooms. Pink: Calming, relaxing and soothing, pink is ideal for kids’ bedrooms. Lilac: Evoking a creative, mysterious or spiritual vibe, lilac is a good choice for bedrooms and bathrooms.
