Visit Hvar HVAR, CROATIA
Hvar is consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful islands in the world, and for good reason. This pearl of the Adriatic has been conquered numerous times throughout history, and from the Greeks to the Venetians, each invading civilisation has enriched the town in a different way. Today, visitors can marvel at the magnificent
views from the Fortress, St Stephen’s Cathedral, the Arsenal building and one of the oldest public theatres in Europe (established in 1612). Hvar Old Town offers a maze of charming cobbled streets and alleys, where a wealth of history can be uncovered. This picturesque spot is also ideal for those looking to brighten up their social media pages. Hvar is home to six UNESCO-protected assets,
including the Stari Grad Plain, dating from the fourth century BCE. The Mediterranean diet, ‘Following the Cross’ procession, lace-making practice of the Benedictine nuns and Klapa singing are all listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage assets and can all be experienced on Hvar. For those in search of a natural paradise, the Pakleni archipelago, which sits opposite Hvar’s
coastline, is not to be missed. This is a place to find relaxation, courtesy of the crickets’ chirping symphonies, the smell of wild herbs and jaw- dropping sunsets. Meanwhile, Hvar island is crisscrossed with many hiking trails and cycle routes, offering a variety of outdoor activities. Known as the ‘Island of Wine’, Hvar boasts a
2,400-year-old winemaking tradition. It’s the perfect spot for viniculture due to optimum terrain configuration, soil composition and being one of the sunniest of the European islands. The gastronomy of Hvar, which centres heavily around fresh fish and Mediterranean ingredients, pairs perfectly with the island’s wine offering. The most popular local specialities are gregada (fish stew) and pašticada (braised beef), served everywhere, from top restaurants to local taverns. Hospitality is woven into Hvar’s DNA, welcoming
visitors since 1869. With Hvar being jam-packed with more one-of-a-kind experiences than can be enjoyed in a single day, visitors would be best served by booking a trip that’s long enough to truly indulge in everything it has to offer.
DON’T MISS Hike to Napoleon Fortress and enjoy the view of the sunset from this impressive historical landmark
