Estancia Nibepo Aike SANTA CRUZ, ARGENTINA
Located within Los Glaciares National Park, on the shores of the southern arm of Lake Argentino, lies Estancia Nibepo Aike. Combining livestock farming, rural traditions and landscapes that stretch from steppe to forest and the soaring peaks of the Andes, it preserves the true essence of the old Patagonian ranches. Santiago Peso, a Croatian immigrant, settled
here in the early 20th century. Together with two compatriots, he founded what was originally called Estancia La Jerónima. Sadly, he passed away at a young age leaving his wife María in charge of managing the estate. María renamed it Nibepo Aike, a name created by combining the nicknames of their three daughters (Nini, Bebé and Porota) with the Tehuelche word aike, meaning place. Today, more than a century and three family
generations later, the ranch continues its livestock activity and close relationship with the land, sharing the values of hard work, hospitality and respect for nature with all who visit. The pioneers’ original family home has been transformed into a country lodge, an ideal setting
for relaxation amid nature. It features 10 rooms (two superior and eight standard), all within a traditional Patagonian-style building with warm interiors, original wooden floors and a working fireplace. Stays include full board and guided activities
that immerse guests in ranch life: cow milking, sheep herding, shearing demonstrations, horse- riding, cycling, scenic hikes and natural lookouts offering views of Lake Argentino. The cuisine is another highlight — guests enjoy complete regional menus using fresh, mostly local ingredients, produce from the ranch’s own garden, and hearty homemade dishes such as stews, pastas and the unmissable Patagonian lamb barbecue. Estancia Nibepo Aike also offers unique
adventure programmes: the Hidden Glaciers Horseback Ride and the Pioneers’ Trek. These journeys, on horse or foot, lead guests from the lodge to remote ranch shelters — Puesto La Rosada, Puesto Cachorro and Puesto Laguna 3 de Abril — crossing Andean forests, mountain rivers and terrain unreachable by vehicle, to reveal hidden glaciers such as Frías, Dickson, Grande and Gorra.
DON’T MISS Soak up life on a century-old Patagonian ranch, surrounded by mountains, lakes and pristine wilderness
