A biting wind howls across the seascape. Sheets of rain lash down, drenching the sand in seconds. A fl ash of lightning cracks through the sky, followed by a low rumble of thunder, while towering waves heave and crash against the shore. It’s the kind of weather that drives most beachgoers indoors — shutters slammed, fi res stoked and prayers whispered that the power will hold. But not on Canada’s Vancouver Island. Here, storm season is a spectacle — and Tofi no’s driftwood-strewn beaches off er a front-row seat to one of Mother Nature’s greatest shows. Storm-watching tourism is just one of the many ways this wild Canadian
island makes the most of its coast, which is why, on p.20, we dive into the activity’s humble beginnings and evolution from a seasonal secret into a year-round global phenomenon. Elsewhere, we explore other ways to embrace Vancouver Island’s wild, wonderful shores — from foraging and cooking with nutrient-rich kelp (p.22) to plunging into the churning currents of Campbell River to witness the maelstrom of the annual salmon run (p.18). We also head off to the Faroe Islands to tackle the Buttercup Routes
— 12 winding roads that snake up through the dark contours of the mountains and down towards far-fl ung coastal villages (p.10), before turning our attention to the UK’s seaside towns, where a remarkable revival is in full swing (p.28). Finally, there’s our roundup of the best hotels and resorts, brought to your
by our advertising partners, to help inspire you when planning your next coastal escape (p.34).
