Zagreb Tourist Board CROATIA
Zagreb is a safe and easy-going city with a thousand faces. Its geographical position makes it easily accessible for many travellers and its state-of-the-art airport is only a 15-minute drive from the city centre. Experiences are abundant — nature-lovers can enjoy hiking or cycling trails on Medvednica mountain, sports enthusiasts can engage in recreational activities at Jarun lake or on Zagreb’s golf courses, and hedonists can expect festivals and events as well as streets filled with restaurants and cafes. Accommodation includes sophisticated hotels
and meticulously designed modern suites. Many hotels have fascinating stories at their heart, such as the grandiose Esplanade, built in 1925 to host the passengers of the Orient Express. Foodies are in for a blend of Mediterranean
and continental cuisines with dishes prepared by world-class chefs, as recognised in prestigious restaurant guide Gault & Millau. Traditional Zagreb dishes such as strukli (a cottage cheese pastry), Zagreb schnitzel and kremsnita (a custard dessert) are a must. After lunch, there’s nothing
better than visiting one of the cafés in Tkalciceva Street, where locals love going for a coffee after browsing one of the city’s food markets. The most popular market is Dolac, which draws daily crowds with fresh produce from all over Croatia. The city’s main shopping destination is Ilica
Street, with designer stores and traditional craft businesses. On Sundays, Britanski Trg Square (British Square) transforms into a colourful antiques fair. Zagreb is rumoured to be the birthplace of the necktie and mechanical pencil, so why not pick up a couple of local examples. Zagreb is home to museums, galleries and
theatres, as well as events and festivals throughout the year including Advent Zagreb Christmas fair. Visitors can explore some unique initiatives, such as the Museum of Broken Relationships, a fascinating collection of items donated by former couples from all over the world. The main streets and squares are crisscrossed
with parks and landscaped gardens. Visitors who wander can discover many natural gems, such as Maksimir, Zagreb’s largest park and zoo.
