Falkland Islands Tourist Board FALKLAND ISLANDS
The Falkland Islands are a remarkable destination rich of history, natural beauty, wildlife and culture. Situated 584 miles from Antarctica, the Falklands is an archipelago consisting of two main islands (East and West Falkland) and more than 740 smaller islands. Minimal development and infrastructure means visitors can experience the abundant wildlife that draws specialists from all over the globe. With in excess of 750,000 penguins across five breeding species, the Falklands is the ultimate place to view penguins. The islands are also home to vast colonies of seabirds, including the world’s largest population of black-browed albatross. Other striking seabirds include the southern
giant petrel, storm petrels and diving petrels. Rock cormorants and imperial cormorants breed on the islands, while skuas and gulls are plentiful, and terns can be seen in some locations. Oystercatchers, plovers and kelp geese inhabit many shores. Black-crowned night herons pick their way along the water’s edge, often sheltering under old jetties and shipwrecks.
Stretched along the sheltered harbour, the
colourful buildings of Stanley bid a warm and friendly welcome to all visitors. The tiny capital city is village-sized, but has the amenities you’d expect of a large town with plenty to discover. Imagine a place that’s so far off the beaten track
that guests have miles of stunning landscape and beaches all to themselves, with a silence that’s only broken by the call of the birds. There’s plenty to do on the islands from wildlife watching, photography, walking and hiking, fishing, arts and crafts or visiting historical sites. On a trip to the Falkland Islands, visitors
will always remember the hospitality in the hotels, lodges and guesthouses on the islands. Accommodation is personal and almost all owner-run. This means visitors get special care and attention, and feel part of Falklands life. This is the Falkland Islands, one of the last
great wilderness destinations where a trip becomes an adventure. Small planes will take you to islands abundant with penguins, albatrosses and petrels.
Don’t miss The chance to visit Volunteer Point on a scenic helicopter tour to see the largest breeding colony of king penguins on the islands
