Editor’s letter E XP E R I ENC ES COL L E C T ION 20 2 3
I was 23 years old the fi rst time I travelled by aeroplane. We didn’t have much money while I was growing up, so air travel wasn’t a thing for me until my fi rst assignment as a journalist. I remember everything, from fi guring out how to check in, not knowing I had to take my shoes off at security, being pressed back against my window seat during the rumbling take-off and then, fi nally, miraculously, being in the air, looking out of the window and seeing clouds within touching distance. Even then, I knew that, while that feeling of being spirited away to
somewhere new was special, I’d also be in danger of becoming jaded to it over time. As we become ‘experienced’ travellers, we need to consciously fi ght against the cynicism that can come with it if we want to hold on to the wonder we felt and continue to wring joy from our journey. After all, what is travel if not a process of collecting experiences? In this issue, we spotlight the concept of experiential travel and the growing
interest in immersive experiences that forge a deeper connection with a destination. We provide insight into how the travel industry is engaging with the demand for this kind of travel (p.10) before rounding up some of the best family-friendly experiences to be had in the UK (p.12). We then explore Greenland’s remote eastern coast (p.16), look at some of the unique experiences available in the ‘Stans’ of Central Asia (p.22) and check out safari trips that don’t involve a standard game drive (p.28). Finally, we provide a rundown of the world’s most unusual and thrilling annual events you can experience for yourself (p.32). If you’re looking for inspiration for your next experience, the Directory,
brought to you by our advertising partners, off ers some of the fi nest properties and experiences across the world.
