Grapetree Bay Hotel & Villas ST CROIX, VIRGIN ISLANDS
The island of St Croix in the US Virgin Islands is renowned for its pristine, secluded beaches, world-class dining options and variety of outdoor activities. It also boasts a rich history, offering great opportunities for exploration. Christiansted, the island’s largest town, was once the capital of the Danish West Indies. The island’s heritage can be seen in the colonial architecture throughout Christiansted and Frederiksted, particularly during visits to the plantation museums and forts, such as Fort Christiansvaern, which dates as far back as 1749. Grapetree Bay Hotel and Villas is located in
Grapetree Bay on the east end of the island, and is intrinsic to the history of St Croix. This iconic resort was the place to be in the 1960s and 1970s until Hurricane Hugo destroyed the property in 1989, leaving it to sit in ruins for the next three decades. However, following an extensive restoration in 2021, the hotel was restored to its former glory. It now has 18 exclusive rooms with private balconies, offering views of the Caribbean Sea and an unmatched guest experience.
Sprawling over 45 acres, the hotel is now home
to one of the largest freshwater pools on the island, where the day can be spent sipping on cocktails from the open-air dining room at the Sea Terrace Restaurant & Bar. There’s also an excellent selection of restaurants to choose from, including a Japanese steakhouse known as The Far East Restaurant as well as a more casual spot that’s well-known for its artisanal pizzas made with fresh dough and homemade sauce called The East End Bar and Restaurant. The hotel offers convenient access to the Jack
and Isaac Bays hiking trail. Here, hotel guests can reconnect with nature while enjoying the 300 acres of secluded white sandy beaches that can only be accessed by foot. Marine life enthusiasts are well catered for, as the area is home to some of the island’s best snorkelling and diving locations, where hundreds of tropical fish and vibrant coral reefs can be seen. The largest nesting population of green and hawksbill turtles on the island are also found there, making sightings of these gentle giants possible for eagle-eyed visitors.
