Cuffie River Nature Retreat MORIAH, TOBAGO
Encircled by forests of cypress, immortelle and bamboo, the Cuffie River Nature Retreat was created by owner Regina as a sanctuary from the modern world; a place of deep peace and immersion in nature. This intimate eco-lodge offers beautifully
appointed rooms, each with its own charm. Built from locally sourced materials, the design blends traditional architecture with modern comforts, including private bathrooms, comfortable beds and rainforest views. Caribbean-inspired decor adds warmth and a strong sense of place. Cuffie River is rooted in sustainability. The
retreat draws on solar energy for hot water and employs other eco-conscious practices to minimise its environmental impact. The restaurant serves fresh, locally sourced meals like fish caught by a village fisherman, and eggs and poultry provided by a staff member, creating a true farm-to- table experience. Regina’s commitment to the local community is longstanding: all staff were originally hired from neighbouring villages over 25 years ago, and many remain today. Among them
is Desmond Wright, the in-house guide, trained by renowned naturalist Roger Neckles, who still leads guests through Tobago’s unique biodiversity today. The retreat is ideally situated near the Main
Ridge Forest Reserve, the oldest protected rainforest in the Western Hemisphere and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guests can explore it on guided or solo hikes, encountering rare birds, colourful flora and even elusive forest creatures. Birdwatching is a highlight, with expert-led tours helping visitors spot species like the Trinidad motmot. For a refreshing dip, the nearby Highland
Waterfall offers natural pools in a tranquil setting. Tobago’s pristine beaches, meanwhile, are a short drive away and ideal for snorkelling, scuba diving or simply relaxing by the sea. For those interested in culture, the island’s
villages and the town of Scarborough are home to local markets, historical sites and vibrant festivals. Combining comfort, sustainability and a
connection to nature and community, Cuffie River is more than a place to stay — it’s an experience that captures the heart and soul of Tobago.
DON’T MISS Party at a local festival — Tobago is world-famous for its spectacular cultural events combining music, dance and art
