Southern Cross Club LITTLE CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS
Founded in 1958 by a group of intrepid adventurers, Southern Cross Club is the original resort on Little Cayman, a tiny sliver of paradise in the British West Indies. Back then, the island was sparsely populated and barely touched by tourism, but the visionaries behind the resort saw something special in it. Over the decades, the resort has evolved while remaining true to its roots: low-key and deeply personal. In 1981, a new wave of explorers took the helm,
including Mike Emmanuel, who helped pioneer some of the Caribbean’s most iconic dive and snorkel sites. Then, in 1995, current owner Peter Hillenbrand coined the phrase ‘Barefoot Luxury’ to define the unique, laid-back yet high-end experience Southern Cross Club offers — and it stuck. Today, with just 14 colourful Caribbean
bungalows scattered along 900ft of pristine beach, the resort offers guests an intimate, tranquil escape. With a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio, service here is warm, personalised and attentive, creating an atmosphere where visitors don’t just feel welcome, they feel at home. It’s no surprise that 80% of guests return. Whether gliding across the
turquoise water in a kayak, heading out on a fishing boat, exploring world-class dive sites or simply swaying in a hammock with a cocktail in hand, the pace is slow, the mood is mellow and the natural beauty is nothing short of breathtaking. Little Cayman itself is the smallest and most
secluded of the three Cayman Islands. Just 10 square miles in size, it remains refreshingly undeveloped. A full 75% of its coastline is protected by the local Department of Environment, preserving the island’s unspoilt character and ensuring the marine environment remains healthy. Located on South Hole Sound, Southern Cross Club offers guests complimentary kayaks to paddle over to nearby Owen Island, a deserted, 11-acre isle, just 1,000ft from shore. A British Overseas Territory, the Cayman
Islands has been independently governed since 1962 and have the highest standard of living in the Caribbean Basin. But Little Cayman is something different: quieter, wilder and more serene. And at its heart is Southern Cross Club, offering an authentic slice of barefoot luxury where comfort, nature and adventure combine.
