ONCE THE SEA TOUCHES YOUR SOUL, LIFE ON LAND WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
SAIL & KAYAK, ŽULJANA BEACH
Eighteen years ago, a travel writer came to explore and enjoy all 13 of Dubrovnik’s Elaphiti Islands by kayak. An article and photos published in the travel section inspired hundreds of readers to enquire about and experience Croatia in a similar way — paddling, cycling, walking, sailing, camping...
SEA KAYAKING AROUND KALAMOTA ISLAND
EU funding helped developing a ‘new’ kind of tourism in lesser-known, underdeveloped areas of Croatia. Now you don’t have to transport your own kayak, bike, camping gear or even Land Rover – they’re already there. We help you create a well ballanced mixture of nature, activity and culture.
MARKO’S SEAFOOD PLACE IN LUKA ŠIPANSKA BAY
Funding went to places such as Luka, on Šipan Island — a beautiful, authentic, unspoiled and friendly village. So, how do you attract visitors to a place they’ve never even heard of? Off er something that doesn’t fi t in cabin luggage — a bike, a kayak, a canoe, a tent or even a Land Rover.
LAND ROVERING DALMATIA’S HINTERLAND
Huck Finn Adventure Travel Co. proposed the MODIN project to implement sustainable tourism and was approved for EU funding for research and development — and this is how they did it: explore, experience and educate. This became a travel package called Land Rovering Croatia.
SAIL & BIKE, LOPUD ISLAND
Some trails were explored by bike — like this one on Lopud Island. Mljet Island and Plitvice Lakes National Park proved that Croatia has some of the most beautiful cycling trails on the planet. Can you imagine riding above and along 16 lakes with hundreds of waterfalls between them?
Canoeing on Lake Prošće is offi cially prohibited, as are cycling and camping. But local operators like Huck Finn fi nd legal, sustainable ways to enjoy nature. Our R&D includes educating communities and offi cials about the lasting benefi ts of responsible, low-impact travel experiences.
SAIL & SUP
The River Una, near Plitvice, borders Croatia and Bosnia. It’s a national park on the Bosnian side but not on the Croatian. Perhaps that’s for the best — it seems Croatian park authorities often manage challenges simply by restricting access.
Walking and hiking are generally welcomed — like here on St Mary’s Islet in the Big Lake of Mljet Island National Park. A monastery here was founded in the 12th century. Trips titled Hiking Croatian National Parks or Biking Croatian National Parks can now be booked online, individually or in a group.
Some beautiful areas can only be reached by boat, like the turquoise bays on the Pelješac Peninsula. Huck Finn I, II, and III catamarans are great for expeditions, with comfortable sleeping (and eating) for up to a dozen explorers. They also carry paddleboards, snorkelling gear, bikes and kayaks.
KAYAK FISHING
Paddling and rowing in waters sheltered by islands is safe when supervised by experienced leaders. The same goes for rivers in nature and national parks, like Mrežnica, Zrmanja, Krka, Kupa, and Krupa. One thing they all have in common: they’re clean, clear, blue or green. Unpolluted, unspoiled by mass tourism.
FISHING AND SNORKELLING
One of the challenges project MODIN is solving is where to stay overnight. Sleeping on a yacht anchored in remote bays allows for a midnight swim under the stars or a full moon, morning stretching in warm water, or exploring the colourful and friendly marine life beneath the surface.
Where to stay overnight in an area without hotels, inns, farms or camps? Glamping by water so clean it’s safe to drink, and getting light from solar-powered batteries, is more than a comfortable way of living in nature. In those places one can rent lights, tents and other camping gear.
DUBROVNIK BASE CAMP
Tipi tents in all areas — cold, hot, dry or humid — are incredibly simple and effi cient, naturally chilled and ventilated shelters by night or day. Not only are they comfortable, once removed, they leave no trace, whether they were erected on a beach by the sea or on the jungle-like Mrežnica River ‘Huck Finn’ island. Beside E-bikes, we also use electric vehicles.
DUBROVNIK RIVER INN
Even when city stays are necessary, we avoid big hotels. We choose authentic places like Huck Finn Dubrovnik River Inn — once a wine trader’s home, now a base for adventures. Guests can explore “the shortest river in the world” with e-bikes, kayaks, canoes, rowboats, and SUPs, right from the doorstep. And, the catamarans will go electric!
PROSCIUTTO, CHEESE, OLIVES AND WINE
And most of the food — healthy and tasty — comes directly from fi shermen, family farms or local restaurants. If you’d like to know more about the MODIN project, book an experience or trip, or join Huck Finn Adventure as a volunteer, scientist or professional. Email info@huck-fi
