Kids in the driving seat

Keeping young drivers safe on the roads is a subject often in the news — with the government discussing the possibility of extending the learning period for new drivers. But should driver education actually start long before 17?

One driver training scheme, which teaches youngsters from as young as four years old, certainly thinks so. Young Driver aims to instil good

driving habits long before they get a provisional licence. Youngsters aged nine to 17 learn the basics of safe, re- sponsible driving in dual-controlled Suzuki Swifts or similar cars, under the supervision of fully qualifi ed in- structors. T ose aged four to nine- years can drive the specially designed electric Firefl y Sport supercars at se- lected venues. Shockingly, 20% of new drivers

crash within six months of passing their test*. According to research done by Young Driver with past pu- pils, that drops dramatically, to fewer than 4% — a reduction of around 80%. T ey’re also more likely to pass their test — the scheme’s research shows that 78% pass fi rst time compared to the national average of 48%. Young Driver pupils can enjoy discounts on insurance because they’re statistical- ly safer drivers. Young Driver is the UK’s largest

provider of pre-17 driving lessons, having delivered more than 1.6 mil- lion lessons across 70 UK venues. A road system is created, with traffi c

signs, roundabouts and junctions, along with special areas to practice manoeuvres such as steering control and parking. T e emphasis of the les- sons is on safety, fun and encouraging youngsters to drive responsibly, giv- ing them time to perfect driving skills without the pressures of public roads. Ian Mulingani, managing director

at Young Driver, said, “Training driv- ers over a longer period of time helps youngsters to have a solid under- standing of how to drive a car before they get anywhere near a real road. Research shows that creates a safer driver — and safer pedestrians and cy- clists, too. But the lessons are also lots of fun and they’re a great confi dence boost, with youngsters taking the re- sponsibility seriously. When they’re reverse parking at the end of the fi rst lesson, it’s a shock for parents!” Driving tuition is available for

youngsters with disabilities or addi- tional needs at every venue.
