Education & Schooling T e Modern Family Welcome to Gatehouse School
Gatehouse School is a well-established independent co-educational primary school in East London, educating boys and girls from three to 11 years old
Founded in May 1948 by Phyllis Wall- bank, an innovator in educational development infl uenced by Maria Montessori, the school began in the historic gatehouse of St Bartholomew the Great Priory Church in Smith- fi eld and later moved in the 1970s to Sewardstone Road, right opposite Victoria Park.
Set in a renovated Victorian build-
ing with modern extensions, Gate- house off ers spacious grounds that include climbing frames and an artifi - cial-grass sports court, as well as con- venient access to the park and nearby outdoor spaces. Its location alongside Regent’s Canal adds to the school’s attractive urban setting. Gatehouse’s non-selective admis-
sions policy means children of all abilities learn together in mixed-abil- ity, non-streamed classes,
support- ed by specialist teaching staff and
dedicated form teachers. T e curric- ulum blends the Early Years Founda- tion Stage (EYFS) with the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, enhanced by the school’s own enriched programmes, regu- lar educational trips and a broad range of extracurricular activities. Specialist teaching is provided in areas such as sport, music, languages and computing. T e school emphasises holistic de-
velopment — children are encouraged to become
independent, confi dent
learners and to enjoy lifelong learning experiences. In addition to academic work, pupils regularly engage in out- ings to museums and theatres, res- idential and outdoor learning trips, and participate in creative arts and sporting activities. A key element of school life is
the champion qualities exercised through the house system. T is fos- ters teamwork and community spirit by grouping pupils into houses such as Dragon, Phoenix, Sphinx and Uni- corn. House events include sports day, talent shows, quizzes and charity eff orts, helping pupils build friend- ships across age groups. Today, Gatehouse School continues
its mission to nurture each child’s unique potential in a caring and sup- portive environment, preparing them for senior school and beyond while instilling values of respect, curiosity and resilience.
