New Families & Family Health Te Modern Family

Is modern family life quietly undermining our health?

Tracy Tredoux shares her tips on how you can support a healthier home

Health challenges in families can sometimes arrive through no fault of your own, but can also build gradually through unhealthy routines that might seem fine at the time. Individually, these habits are often harmless, but combined they can slowly chip away at physical energy, emotional resilience and family connection. Nutritional therapist and function-

al medicine practitioner Tracy Tre- doux works with families who are do- ing their best but still feel worn down. What she sees repeatedly isn’t a lack of effort, but a lifestyle that no longer supports optimal health. Here, she outlines ways to better support your family’s health.

FOOD THAT FILLS TIME RATHER THAN NOURISHES In some households, food may be cho- sen for speed rather than sustenance. Snacks might replace meals and ul- tra-processed foods can sometimes creep into daily routines because they’re convenient and familiar. Over time, this can affect blood sugar bal- ance, concentration, mood and long- term metabolic health. A more supportive approach starts

with availability rather than perfec- tion. Keeping simple, whole foods within easy reach and involving chil- dren in meal choices can gently shift eating habits without creating pres- sure or guilt around food.

A LIFE LIVED MOSTLY INDOORS Modern family life often unfolds in- side. Schoolwork, work calls, enter- tainment and even socialising now happen under one roof. Reduced ex- posure to natural light and movement can influence sleep patterns, energy levels and overall wellbeing. Small, consistent changes make the

biggest difference. Short walks, out- door play or building movement into daily routines can help regulate mood and support better sleep without needing structured exercise plans.

DIGITAL DISTRACTION AS THE BACKGROUND SETTING Phones, tablets and streaming plat- forms may become constant com- panions for some families. While technology offers connection and

convenience, excessive screen use can fragment attention and disrupt sleep. Families

can benefit from clear

but realistic boundaries. Screen-free meals, device-free bedrooms or agreed evening cut-off times help protect rest and connection without turning screens into a source of conflict.

WHEN CONNECTION BECOMES OPTIONAL Shared family time may often be the first thing sacrificed when sched- ules are tight. Eating separately or multitasking through conversa- tions can gradually erode the small daily check-ins that help families stay emotionally connected. Regular shared meals, even a few

times a week, provide a simple an- chor, creating space for conversation and awareness.

THE WEIGHT OF BUSYNESS Many families operate in a near-per- manent state of

rush. When every

week is filled to capacity, stress be- comes the norm rather than the exception. Over time, this can af- fect sleep, digestion, immunity and emotional regulation in both adults and children. Rest isn’t a luxury. Protecting un-

structured time, quieter evenings or slower weekends allows the nervous system to reset and supports long- term health.

A HEALTHIER FAMILY DOESN’T REQUIRE AN OVERHAUL Meaningful change can come from simplifying rather than striving. Sup- porting family health is less about doing more and more about removing what drains energy and connection. By prioritising nourishing food, reg-

ular movement, shared time and gen- uine rest, families can work to create a healthier home that supports wellbe- ing and emotional resilience.
