Confetti Flower Field in Wick

Bloomin’ marvellous: a spring trail T

he Vale of Evesham has long been famous for growing fruit and vegetables. It’s also known

to have some of the most productive horticultural land in the country. And, for a few weeks in spring, typically between mid-March and mid-May, the roadsides along the Vale of Evesham come alive with blooming hedgerows and orchards throughout the market towns of Pershore and Evesham, the Cotswolds village of Broadway and many other delightfully picturesque villages in the area. Te beautiful buds that unfold in spring throughout

the Vale of

Evesham in Worcestershire have been long renowned. Te Blossom Trail officially launched in 1983, and many tourists visit the area to see this natural wonder of spring in person along the 55-mile route. Blossom trail-blazers can travel by

foot, bike, or car or even take part in a guided tour to see pear, cherry, black- thorn, damson, plum and apple trees

showing off their gorgeous springtime blooms. Over 3,000 acres of apple and plum orchards are in the Vale today, and more trees are added every year, including last year when Japan gifted Sakura cherry trees to the area. Te white plum and damson blossom are the first to spring in this natural work of art, with the white pear and the pink apple blossom following later. One of the best ways to explore

the Blossom Trail is on a coach tour, where an experienced guide shares fascinating facts about the blos- soms and the area. Royal Motorways (royalmotorways.co.uk) arranges the Springtime in the Vale Coach tour, which this year will take place on Wednesday, 9 April. Alternatively, a tour guide can be booked by contacting Helen Piper on 01386

765972 or emailing

helen.piper@normandygite.org.uk. If you’d prefer to take in the acres

of petal-laden orchards in your own time, travelling the trail by car allows

you to visit pubs, restaurants, cafes and farm shops in the area. With many of these offering fresh local produce and beverages, including a blossom cider specially created by Wayside Farm Shop, not to mention delicious blossom cream teas, these many and varied establishments offer gastronomic delights in relaxing and beautiful surroundings — you’ll be spoilt for choice. Don’t be fooled to think the kalei-

doscope of colour around the Vale of Evesham is limited to the spring. Tere is also a rare chance to see fields carpeted with delphiniums at Te Real Flower Petal Confetti Co in the village of Wick in June. Tis highlight in the calendar is only open for 10 days and tickets are released shortly before. Keep an eye on confettidirect.co.uk for details to experience what’s been described as ‘heaven!’

As the winter weather finally thaws, scenic spring will erupt, providing an ideal opportunity for a road trip, cycle ride or walk for all the family.
