Emotions for Learning
St John’s College School in Cambridge explains how its Emotions for Learning curriculum meets the emotional and social needs of children
T
he state of children’s mental health has never been more important. St John’s College
School recognises that it’s essential our children have the tools they need to navigate a complex world. Children today live in a time of
great uncertainty and change, and it’s important they understand their internal world as much as what’s going on around them. Learning to build relationships with care and trust, communicating emotions, problem- solving, creativity and embed- ding strategies to deal with tough times should be crucial elements of education if our children are to be successful in the adult world. Positive touch, a smile or a gentle hand on the shoulder, and deep teacher-student relationships are also important. St John’s College School — located
in leafy surroundings just west of the historic centre of Cambridge — was awarded the prestigious title of Pre-Prep School of the Year at the Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2024. At the heart of the school’s submission for this award was its bespoke Emotions for Learning (E4L) programme.

T irteen years ago, St John’s College
School created the E4L curriculum, originally for four- to nine-year-olds. E4L supports children’s emotional and social needs and good mental health. It helps children understand and identify their emotions, develop empathy, manage
increase stress.
It
self-control and also
improves
relationships and interpersonal skills, crucial for school and future success, and helps to build emotional intelli- gence and agility, now highly desired workforce skills. T e school believes an E4L-based approach is essential for building a foundation upon which children’s wellbeing can grow. E4L is now embedded into the school’s culture, ensuring it’s eff ective
for all. Teachers are taught how to build meaningful relationships that help children thrive; they ‘Listen with Heart’, creating a safe space for deep listening, helping children to develop thinking and become the best learners they can. Teachers model compliments to help children develop
positive self-image and appreciation for others, fostering mutual care. At the centre of this is a dialogue process that helps children communicate and solve problems compassionately. By embedding E4L into its curric-
ulum, St John’s College School can help its children navigate life’s ups and downs, improve concentration and give them the opportunity to understand and fulfi l their potential and ultimately be their best selves.
