Managing hearing loss C
Mr Abhi Parikh on how to handle ear issues
hildren and adults can have ear conditions that may cause a conductive hearing loss, which
is when sound doesn’t reach the inner ear efficiently. Conditions causing this hearing loss can be treated, either in a clinic or by surgery. An otologist can treat these conditions.
Outer ear conditions Wax accumulation: Secretions from skin of the outer ear combine to form wax. Interference with its natural tendency to extrude leads to a build up and hearing loss. Tis is managed with drops and microsuction. Otitis externa: Inflammation of
the outer ear causes swelling and debris in the ear canal, interfering with sound transmission. Tis can be managed with drops and microsuction.
Middle ear conditions Glue ear: Fluid in the middle. Tis is common in children. It resolves naturally but, if persistent, it can be treated with surgery. Ear drum perforation: Tis can
not only cause hearing loss but also middle ear infections. Myringoplasty surgery can be performed. Cholesteatoma: Tis is skin cell
collection in the middle ear, which grows and erodes vital ear structures. It’s slow growing but over time it causes significant damage. Mastoidectomy surgery is the treatment of choice.
Ossicle damage: Middle ear bones
form a chain to transmit sound. Te chain can be stiff or discontinuous due to previous infections, cholestea- toma or injury. Ossiculoplasty surgery can help. Otosclerosis: Stapes is the smallest
bone in the body and the last bone in the ossicular chain. Its movement is restricted if you have otosclerosis. Stapedectomy surgery can help.

Revolutionising spine surgery W
Back pain, sciatica and nerve compression are challenges that many face, but the pioneering endoscopic technique that Irfan Malik uses is helping to transform treatment
ith over a decade of experi- ence and a track record of more than 1,500 successful
cases, Mr Malik has established himself as a leader in the field of endoscopic spine surgery. His innovative techniques aim to offer relief without the prolonged recovery times associated with tradi- tional spine surgeries.
A trailblazer in endoscopic spine surgery Mr Malik introduced endoscopic spine surgery to the country in 2010, making him a pioneer in this highly special- ised, ultra-minimally invasive proce- dure. Tis technique has since become a game-changer for patients suffering from lumbar and cervical spine issues, including chronic back pain, sciatica, nerve compression and disc problems. What sets Mr Malik apart is not only his expertise but his dedication to teaching. As a world-renowned proctor,
he’s trained over 100 surgeons nation- ally
and internationally, spreading
his knowledge and helping to improve patient outcomes globally.
What is endoscopic spine surgery? Endoscopic spine surgery is a state-of- the-art procedure performed through a tiny, 7mm skin incision — no larger than a scratch. Unlike traditional spine surgery, which often involves cutting through muscles and entering the spinal canal, this method targets the problem area directly. Using advanced imaging and special-
ised instruments, Mr Malik accesses the spine from the side, completely avoiding the need to disturb back muscles or the spinal canal. Te results? A safer proce- dure with fewer risks, less pain and, generally, a quicker recovery.
Patient benefits: a new era in spine surgery Tis revolutionary approach could offer a host of benefits that traditional spine surgeries can’t: • Minimally invasive — no significant cuts, no muscle damage and minimal scarring.
• Faster recovery — the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, allowing patients to walk out pain-free just four hours after surgery.
• Better tolerance — without the trauma of traditional surgery, patients experi- ence less postoperative pain and faster rehabilitation.
• Precision targeting — the technique focuses only on the problematic area, leaving
surrounding tissues
unharmed. “Endoscopic spine surgery changes
lives,” says Mr Malik. “We’re no longer bound by the limitations of conven- tional methods. Tis is precision medicine at its finest, offering relief and restoring quality of life with minimal disruption.”
A vision for the future Mr Malik’s mission is clear: to make cutting-edge spine care accessible to as many people as possible. His dedication to training other surgeons helps ensure that
this revolutionary technique
reaches patients worldwide. “Our ultimate goal is to provide
painless, effective solutions for spine problems, which
allow patients to
return to their lives without the ordeal of long recoveries,” he explains. If you or a loved one are considering treat- ment
related issues, consult Mr Irfan Malik to learn more about how endoscopic spine surgery can help. With his expertise and cutting-edge techniques, relief is closer than ever before.
