ration or divorce assume that the first step must be to instruct a divorce lawyer. However, this traditional approach can unin- tentionally

encourage conflict

from the outset. It’s not the fault of the lawyers, but the arrival of formal legal letters, even if non-ad- versarial, often trigger emotions such as fear, resentment, outrage or denial. And if the other person ‘lawyers up’, things can quickly spiral out of control. It’s not uncommon for the couple

to end up relying on lawyers to communicate on issues that

become tactical exchanges where, with the right expert support, could have been resolved consen- sually. Tensions and hostilities can escalate and this in turn often leads to children getting drawn in to the conflict — something that everyone wants to avoid. Te Alternative Divorce Company

offers a new approach called the Healthy Breakup Programme. Te programme has been designed for couples taking their first steps in divorce or a breakup who want the outcome to be a cost-effective and emotionally well-managed process that places any children at the heart of the important deci- sion-making and supports consen- sual financial settlements. Even with the best of inten-

tions, this can be very difficult for couples to achieve. Divorce and breakups, by their very nature, trigger emotional responses that can be hugely destructive and difficult to control. Tat’s why the Healthy Breakup Programme involves one-to-one specialist work with each half of the couple at the outset, to lay the important foun- dations for an amicable breakup. Te programme supports clear thinking, which helps the couple to achieve fair and swift outcomes, supports each half of the couple to

manage emotions that might other- wise interfere with a conflict-free process, encourages considered and thoughtful communication between the couple and facilitates calm discussions about finances and/or children, which are family focused. Both individuals work with their

own breakup specialist coach over a number of sessions and, if requested, will also have access to family lawyers, financial experts, mediators and other specialists who are similarly committed to helping couples achieve well-in- formed, legally binding and cost-ef- fective agreements about finances and children. While the programme offered by

the Alternative Divorce company is ideal for couples, it’s also open

to individuals. Not all couples will share the same view about how they want to manage their divorce or breakup. For that reason, the Alternative Divorce Company also offers programmes that are specifi- cally tailored to the individual who could be at any stage in their divorce or breakup and who needs support in navigating the challenges they’re facing. Te service is very broad- ranging and can include helping individuals to decide whether they want to end a marriage or work to save it, supporting individuals to overcome the fears of initiating the breakup, best methods for telling children about the split, creating child-focused parenting plans, managing financial negotiations in mediation, tools for successful co-parenting and so much more.
