Celebrating 10 years of innovation at Leeds
Te Leeds Gamma Knife Centre, at Nova Healthcare, is currently marking its 10th anniversary
Te Leeds Gamma Knife Centre treated its first patient on 10 March 2009. Over the last decade, the centre has helped thousands of patients for a range of conditions in the brain including benign tumours and metastatic disease using its Gamma Knife machine. Gamma Knife is able to reach deep
areas in the three-dimensional brain using computer
imaging to guide very narrow and intensely focused beams of gamma radiation with pinpoint accuracy to defined areas. The radiation delivery is extremely precise, which means tissue surrounding the treat- ment area is spared. The technolo- gy’s level of precision and accuracy
allows delivery of highly effective doses of radiation exactly where needed while preserving healthy surrounding tissue and its function as well as quality of life. In 2015, the centre upgraded to
the Leksell Gamma Knife Icon — the only one in the north of England — which has enabled the treatment of tumours previously considered too high risk either due to their size or proximity to critical structures. This upgrade took a great treat-
ment option and made it even better, building on the Perfexion system that’s been the gold standard in stereotactic radiosurgery since 2006. These
innovations improve the patient experience, allow for new
treatment methods and increase the guaranteed precision to 0.15mm, making it the preferred option for the Leeds Gamma Knife specialists. Leksell Gamma Knife Icon gives
clinicians the option to perform single or fractionated frame-based or
frameless treatments, allowing
for more individualized delivery — without sacrificing precision and accuracy. Whichever cranial condi- tion you treat with Icon, unrivalled precision is achieved. Tat applies to both frame-based and frameless immobilization. A benefit of the Icon system is the
flexibility in designing your treat- ment. Te Icon system still uses 192 individual beams of radiation to target the area of interest directly, and with increased precision. However, consultants now have the option of delivering a single, large dose to treat your condi- tion or using multiple smaller doses
in an approach called fractionated radiosurgery. Te Leeds Gamma Knife Centre
works in close collaboration with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and NHS England to deliver an outstanding service to both NHS and private patients. It’s also the only centre in the north of England commissioned by NHS England to offer treatment to children and young adults.
THE TECHNOLOGY’S LEVEL OF PRECISION AND ACCURACY ALLOWS DELIVERY OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE DOSES OF RADIATION EXACTLY WHERE NEEDED WHILE PRESERVING HEALTHY SURROUNDING TISSUE AND ITS FUNCTION
