We talk to respected and highly reviewed London / Surrey based gastroenterologist Dr Derek Chan. He’s presented to colleagues nation- ally and internationally and has published widely in medical journals and media.
Q: What’s your area of expertise? A: I see and treat patients with a wide variety of gastrointestinal issues; from acid reflux, change in bowel habit, bloating and abdom- inal pain to liver and pancreatic issues. My specialist interest is in inflammatory bowel diseases and nutrition. During my specialist training I spent a period of time in research, looking at the effect of diet and gut bacteria in bowel inflammation. Since then, diet and the effect on the gut bacteria and health has become an exploding field in research, with some highly fascinating results.
Q: How did you get into your chosen career and why?
A: My interest in medicine stemmed from a very young age. My mother is a retired nurse. When I was little she’d tell me all about her day at work, which I found so interesting. She’d also sometimes take me to her hospital to have a look around and my ambition to become a

doctor grew from there. My first job as a junior doctor was on a gastro- enterology team at Epsom General Hospital. Te consultant in charge was well respected and so inspiring that I became drawn to this field.
Q: What do you enjoy most about what you do?
A: I enjoy the huge variety of work and the people I meet. I can be sitting in a clinic one morning and doing an emergency endoscopy a few hours later. I love that gastroenterology is a highly dynamic field — there are new advances and research devel- opments coming every week.

Q: Is there a secret to your success? A: I continue to enjoy and be interested
in my work, and think this is key to succeeding, no matter what you do. Hard work and support is impor- tant, and I have my parents who have always supported me in my journey to be a doctor and gastro- enterologist. I also have a good work-life balance. Outside of work I love spending time with my wife, Jennifer and our two young boys, Nathan and Reuben.
Q: How does it feel to have recently been awarded the ‘IWantGreatCare Certificate of Excellence 2019?’
A: I really appreciate the feedback I receive from my patients about the treatment and care they receive. It’s a great privilege that the service I provide has been recognised in this way.
Q: What do think your clients value most about your services?
A: I like to treat my patients holisti- cally and treat each one as an indi- vidual. One problem can mani- fest itself in so many different ways in different people, so that the treatment of one illness can vary depending on the person I’m treating. I also believe very strongly that a lot of stomach / gastroin- testinal issues can be improved by diet and I work closely with a great group of specialist dietitians.
