IT’S IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO DETERMINE WHETHER A DENTIST HAS ACQUIRED THE NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. WITH RAPID TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS AND CHANGES IN IMPLANT DESIGNS & MATERIALS
3. WHY DO PEOPLE TRAVEL ABROAD FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS? One of the main reasons some people go abroad for dental implant treat- ment is a perceived cost saving. Some of the main diffi culties encountered are likely to be: communication; information about the treatment; quality control of the implants and all the critical individual small compo- nents that make up the implant resto- ration; support if there is a problem; and aftercare. Dental implant treatment is a life-
time commitment. Aftercare may prove to be a problem as often this isn’t off ered as part of the treatment. Dental implant treatment requires regular visits to the clinic, before, during and after implant surgery, then continuing careful maintenance for the lifetime of the restorations. T ese appointments are more conven- ient and less expensive if they’re kept in the UK. If you seek follow-up care in the UK after having implant
treatment
abroad, it can sometimes be very diffi cult for local dentists to help. Standards vary from one country to another, and there are implant systems available abroad, particularly low-cost systems, that may be diffi cult to service in the UK.
4. CAN MY OWN DENTIST PROVIDE MY IMPLANTS? Your dentist may off er dental implant treatment if they’ve completed the necessary training but, if not, they should be able to refer you to an implant practice. T ey may work together with an implant clinic, where the implant placement is completed by an experienced dentist and then returned to your own dentist for the bridge or crown to be fi tted.

various options for treating your dental problems (including non-im- plant options) and to establish the dentist’s implant credentials. Ask: - How long have you been placing implants?
- How many dental implants do you place each year?
- What’s your success rate? - What’s the extent of your formal training in implant surgery?
- How many bone grafting procedures have you performed? - Do you ever
diffi cult cases to a more experienced specialist in the fi eld?
- Have you undertaken any dental implant education courses during the last year?
- Ask to speak to a member of staff who’s dedicated to helping you understand your implant treatment.
- Ask to speak to other patients at the practice about their implant treat- ment experience.
- Ask to see before and after photos. refer complex or
5. IS THE DENTIST YOU’RE SEEING A ‘VISITING DENTIST’? Find out if the dentist who’s carrying out the implant treatment is a visiting dentist. Does the dentist have the same range of components, the expe- rienced team, familiar and dedicated facilities that you’d fi nd in a daily implant practice? Will they be avail- able to you if you need them?
6. HOW MUCH SHOULD IT COST? It would be impossible to give an exact cost as each individual situation is diff erent and therefore the specifi c implant treatment required, and the costs involved, need to be determined for each individual. Before agreeing to any dental work,
you need to make sure you under- stand what’s involved and the costs for each phase of treatment. It’s essential to remember and be aware of subtle diff erences that can aff ect the price, such as the use of a trust- worthy implant system and the orig- inal manufacturer’s own components — used throughout without low-cost substitutes — the surgical

technique, and the experience of the dentist. We’d advise asking for a breakdown of costs. Most practices will be very open
and clear about the costs associated with the procedure and will happily share this with you prior to any work being carried out. At Dawood & Tanner, we ensure
that the fees we charge for our treat- ments are fair and competitive. We make sure our patients receive a detailed treatment plan and quota- tion, including all the necessary tests, procedures and components that comprise the FULL dental implant treatment from beginning to end.
