Transforming the treatment of digestive health
Te London Clinic offers fast access to digestive specialists
Our increasingly busy lifestyles may be leading to a rise in the number of people seeking help for stomach pain, unexplained weight loss and other digestive issues such as heart- burn, bloating and diarrhoea, diges- tive health specialists say. “In the past year, over 9,000 people
have referred themselves, or been referred by GPs, to our hospital’s specialist digestive centre, which is a significant rise,” says Dr Rehan Haidry, consultant gastroenterologist at Te London Clinic, a leading private independent hospital and charity. “Te people I see often complain
of stomach pain or other digestive issues. Stress is frequently mentioned as a key issue, along with not having enough time to prepare meals, which can mean a reliance on less healthy, convenience foods. “Common digestive problems such
as stomach pain, heartburn and bloating can stop people enjoying their lives, which is why we offer
same-day testing and results, to provide peace of mind. “Sadly, some common symptoms
can be a sign of more serious diges- tive problems. Te London Clinic’s digestive centre has access to clin- ical innovations, an on-site laboratory and specialist technologies such as the latest 3T MRI scanner to detect, diagnose and treat serious long- term conditions including inflamma- tory bowel disease (IBD) and bowel cancer,” adds Dr Haidry.
INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS An example of the innovation happening in digestive health at Te London Clinic is the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty technique. Tis weight- loss procedure, not widely available in the UK, is an effective alternative to current surgical methods for people who are obese. Tis procedure reduces the capacity
of the stomach by creating a narrow sleeve, using an endoscope (a camera
which passes from the mouth into the stomach). Results in the USA, Europe and
Australia show that people can lose up to 30% of their excess weight in the first six months. Further clinical data from the USA has shown patient weight- loss of 15% after five years, a positive outcome considering the tendency to put on weight on over time. Dr Haidry leads a team of 45 diges-
tive specialists at Te London Clinic, supported by Edwin Abacan and his team of specialist nurses. Te diges- tive centre recently received JAG accreditation — a formal
recogni-
tion of endoscopy (digestive) service excellence from Te Royal College of Physicians. “Anyone at any age can suffer from
stomach pain and digestive prob- lems,” says Dr Haidry. “Te good news is that digestive
specialists here offer fast access to appointments and results, so we can get to the bottom of any problem, enabling the individual to get back to normal life quickly. Te care pathway from initial telephone call, through to consultation, testing, diagnosis and treatment is fast, efficient and reas- suring. Tis is supported by our chefs, dieticians and physiotherapists who provide expert advice and coaching to suit people’s individual needs,” adds Dr Haidry. As
a charitable hospital, Te 3T MRI SCANNER AT THE LONDON CLINIC
London Clinic reinvests its income into clinical innovations in diges- tive health, cancer care and ortho- paedics (including hips, knees and shoulders) that aren’t available in many other hospitals. Teir aim is to improve outcomes for patients and advance healthcare within the wider healthcare community, including the NHS.
