VOLUNTEER A W ARDS

T H ANKS TO OUR

Volunteers are an essential but sometimes invisible part of the outdoor community. Behind the scenes, they do all sorts, from working to conserve our outdoor environment to running clubs, and from writing guidebooks to organising festivals and maintaining mountain huts. Without the input from these volunteers it would be much more difficult for us to access the activities that we love.

Fiona Saunders receiving the George Band Award

To recognise their massive contribution, the BMC has a number of awards that members can nominate volunteers for. These awards are presented each year at the President’s Dinner, which is held on the weekend of the BMC AGM. The George Band Award for Exceptional Voluntary Contribution to Mountaineering recognises people who have played a significant role in the BMC’s work over an extended period of time, with past recipients having devoted their time and expertise to the work of the BMC on access and conservation, clubs, competition climbing, equipment, guidebooks, finance, and mountain heritage. The Rehan Siddiqui Award for Exceptional Voluntary Contribution

towards promoting Equality and Diversity recognises those who have made a significant voluntary contribution to the BMC’s commitment to increasing opportunities for under-represented groups to participate in climbing, hill walking or mountaineering and the work of the BMC. Established in 2018, the award was named in honour of former chair of

the BMC Equity Steering Group Rehan Siddiqui, who in 2015 became the first member of a minority ethnic community to be elected BMC president. The Young Volunteer of the Year Award recognises those young people (under 25 years of age) who have made a significant voluntary contribution to the BMC and its commitment to supporting participation in climbing, hill walking and mountaineering thereby acting as role models to other young people, to encourage volunteering in the BMC. Honorary Membership is only awarded in exceptional circumstances, by invitation from the BMC National Council, and is in recognition of significant service to mountaineering and to the BMC. Lynn Robinson, BMC President said, “As I travel around the country I continue to be amazed by the number of members who volunteer their time. The BMC simply could not exist without your commitment, so thank you. Nominations are now open for the above awards, so please put forward who you think deserves this recognition.”
