WELCOME HEADING

Welcome to the BMC members’ handbook – 2020

As I write this we are in the middle of lockdown to help contain the worldwide pandemic of the COVID-19 virus – what strange times we find ourselves living in. A beautiful spring and I find myself exploring my local parks and discovering new urban paths instead of wandering into the mountains.

Now more than ever, the importance of access has been highlighted and is under the spotlight as we all await guidance on when lockdown measures will be relaxed and lifted. We are working hard, on your behalf, to lobby and influence the English and Welsh governments. Access and conservation remain firmly at the heart of the BMC and this essential work will continue and benefits all.

Reflecting on a busy 2019, an exceptional amount was achieved thanks to the continued hard work and commitment of the BMC staff and hundreds of dedicated volunteers. The BMC Hills2Oceans campaign was launched and has already removed mountains of waste. Hundreds of litter picks have already taken place. We all have a part to play in protecting and cleaning the environments we love. Climate change remains in the forefront of political and public debate: in 2020 the BMC will be launching its own Climate Project and publishing its Emergency Declaration in response to this.

Climbing is due to be part of the delayed Olympics, now planned to take place in 2021. Shauna Coxsey has become the first selected GB climber and I wish her well for her continued training. She is such an amazing role model and inspiration to so many people. Many congratulations to all the athletes selected to compete. The climbing competition schedule may currently be on hold, but when able to restart, I look forward to watching all the competitions from the Youth Climbing Series to Paraclimbing, climbing nationals, international competitions, and the Ice Climbing World Cup.

Just before lockdown, a major hill walking event took place in March. It was a packed agenda: from practical navigation workshops, to debates on upland rewilding, to the BMC hill walking ambassador Mary-Ann Ochta giving a fascinating keynote speech on the hidden histories of our hills.

The work of the BMC continues to be far-reaching and influential but relies on continued membership support. Hence membership is valued and important whatever the reasons or activities of members. The AGM taking place on 13 June will be virtual this year. Please do get involved to hear more, ask questions and influence the BMC future.

Thank you to all for your continued support. If we stay together we will remain strong. Look forward to seeing you all soon. Hope you stay safe and well.

Thanks again, and have a great year filled with adventure.

Lynn Robinson BMC President
