TOYOTA CONNECT
ELECTRIC VEHICLE TECH You’ve heard it all before – EVs are the
future. However, they currently suffer from one epic issue: limited range. Toyota’s engaged in tireless research and development to improve battery performance and advance related technologies, but has also taken a new direction with it. Imagine an ultra-compact vehicle with the convenience of a bike and the comfort of a car, all in one. Well, it exists. The i-ROAD is Toyota’s concept for urban mobility. Ultra-compact, at just 870mm wide, it’s easy to manoeuvre even in tight spaces. Then there’s the iQ EV, based on the normal iQ, which offers a spacious interior for four and highly efficient electric power consumption. Just think – quite soon you’ll be able
to zip easily through Jozi’s gridlock traffic in your i-ROAD, only using your normal Corolla runabout for longer semi-urban and rural trips.
CLIMATE CONTROL Keeping your cool on the road is
important, right? Yet, in SA’s hot, dry climate, it isn’t always easy to do that. Park in the sun for a few minutes and the car becomes an oven. Luckily, the majority of local Toyota
models now have air-con or climate control systems as standard. In some of the fancier models, you can even pre-set the air-con to cool down the vehicle before you get in. Others have an auto function to quickly reach the desired temperature and, with dual- function systems, you can personalise your level of “cool”. If your Toyota has a manual
system, remember to initially use the recirculation function to adjust the temperature faster, before returning it to the normal airflow function. Don’t forget to do this, as the normal flow function makes the system more efficient and can also help save fuel.
In smoggy or dusty conditions, use
the recirc function to keep smoke and dust out of the vehicle. And when you open the windows, remember to switch off the climate control.
PAINT TECH You like your car’s paint job? Great!
Toyota’s done loads of R&D to ensure the colour you fell in love with lasts. How did it do that? Paint hates the
sun, so the manufacturers had to find a way to prevent it from fading over time. This took many serious lab hours, but eventually Toyota developed a special self-restoring paint which keeps your car’s coat shiny-new.
BEHIND THE SCENES
TECHNOLOGY IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURES TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A CAR. BUT HOW MANY OF US ACTUALLY USE ALL THE COOL FEATURES IN OUR VEHICLES, OR KNOW HOW THEY AFFECT OUR AUTOMOBILITY?
