THE EXPERTS • Find a mentor to teach you. • Start by cultivating edible plants in your garden. • Learn about dangerous species first so that you know exactly what to avoid.
• Use all your senses, not just your eyes. Smell and feel before you taste. In many cases, poisonous plants smell offensive.
• Some parts of a plant may be edible, while others are poisonous.
• Know the water source – edible plants growing in contaminated water are poisonous.
• The plant must look healthy. • Get permission from the land-owner. • Practise and document, creating your own guidebook along the way.
