DO
The Adventure Zone (tel: 012 736 9058) promises adrenaline-pumping activities like extreme ziplining, abseiling, rap- jumping and quad-biking, plus horseback safaris, archery, game drives and more. Expect breathtaking gorges, cliffs and rivers. Packages can be tailor-made for group bookings. • Tee off at one of the oldest greens in SA at the Cullinan Golf Club (est in 1905). In 1969, the nine-hole course was redesigned, but with the exception of one tee, the present-day course is much as it was after this work was completed. • Take a scenic hot-air balloon ride for a
bird’s-eye view of the town and surrounds. This is only available at certain times of year, so check with the tourist info bureau (email:
Cullinantourism@telkomsa.net). • Browse at Windmill Delights and
Living in Style on Oak Avenue, or pop into The Warehouse, located opposite the station for fantastic antiques.
EAT & DRINK The Cullinan Premier Hotel (est in 1906)
has been beautifully restored and, besides accommodation, features a cigar lounge and a fine-dining restaurant. • A really cool bar is Brilliante La Mia which has vinyls stuck on the walls and ceiling. The hall next door has about 10 huge murals hand-painted by Italian prisoners-of-war in 1942. • Another great drinking hole is
Oppistasie (pictured top right) on the old platform at the railway station, where you can enjoy a hearty pub meal and literally watch the sun go down through the windows.
32 • For delicious cappuccinos and cakes,
take a seat at The Lemon Tree (tel: 012 734 0078) or get the requisite caffeine-shot at the Cullinan Trading Post Cocopan Coffees, also on Oak Avenue. • Enjoy a local beer brewed on-site at the
Cockpit Brew House. • For dinner, you can’t go wrong at the famous As Greek as it Gets (tel 012 734 0707). In the mood for pizza or pasta? Try Piacere (tel: 082 829 6797). • For the perfect selfie moment, get to
the look-out point at the Big Hole – just don’t fall in! With brilliant sunsets, it’s the ideal sundowner spot.
in Oak St, (tel: 012 734 1857 or visit:
www.oakhousevenue.co.za). Furnished with original hand-crafted pieces imported from England in the early 1900s and boasting high Edwardian ceilings, this is vintage luxury at its best, and a beautiful revamp of the original general manager’s house. An intimate environment, Oak House has three luxurious double en-suite rooms and hosts weddings, conferences and other functions. • Visit or stay at Jan Harmsgat
(tel: 082 255 2465), a quirky place with enamel pots and cups built into the walls and a lovely view over the dam. Take in a pamper at Zau Spa next door. • One stop down is Lakeview Cottage
(082 930 5180) – a good option for larger groups keen on self-catering accommodation with fantastic views.
