EATING IN

The travel industry has realised that sometimes guests just want to enjoy a world-class meal while wrapped up in a bathrobe and perched on a comfy bed – and an in-room dining revolution is taking place. Hotels across the globe are finding ways to take room service

beyond a mere afterthought and make it a lavish experience in its own right. Elaborate room-service menus offer guests the opportunity to enjoy Michelin-star-standard cuisine delivered right to their door. The menu at Nobu Resorts & Hotels includes quail’s eggs dipped in truffle oil, a Japanese bento box and a risotto of escargots, while the Muse Hotel in Manhattan, New York, offers a range of room-service items that allow guests to create their own party, including a popcorn bar, taro chips, vegetable wraps and a selection of cheeses, grapes and breads.

LET’S GET ROLLING

LG Display recently unveiled its 65” OLED, the world’s first big-screen TV that can be rolled up and packed away. This chic, crisp appliance has a range of nifty features. With the press of a button, the TV can sink down just enough to shift its aspect ratio from 16:9 to the cinematic 21:9, which means you can enjoy an ultra-wide screen without any borders or obstructions. The screen can sink down even further, revealing only an information bar that allows you to display and control your smarthome information, music controls and apps. And when you’re no longer watching it, you can roll it up like a sheet of high-tech paper and stash it away. Visit: www.lgdisplay.com

A DAZZLING DOUGHNUT

The latest hybrid food fad to make the rounds on Instagram is the colourful and delicious sushi doughnut. Jack Salmon Fish House in Durban is offering a local take in the form of a sushi-rice doughnut stuffed with fresh tuna, cream cheese and sweet chilli before being tempura- battered, panko-crumbed and fried. The golden doughnut is then topped off with a soya sauce reduction, sweet chilli sauce, Kewpie mayo and salmon caviar before being served on a bed of salty nori. Shop No 15, Glenore Centre, 1 Aubrey Drive, Glen Ashley, Durban. Tel: 031 572 3664. Visit: www.jacksalmon.co.za
