ON THE MOVE

SWOOPY AND STYLISED,

TOYOTA DIALS THE C-HR UP TO 11 The chisel-sharp compact cross-over gets new kicks and more

This is the usual drill. A vehicle manufacturer will instruct its team of talented designers to style a concept, fill them with skinny caramel lattes, lock them in a room with mood music and whiteboards, then wait to see what comes out the other side. Sometimes it’s a disaster, but

usually, unbridled by the practicalities of international traffic laws and production budgets, the outcome will be fantastic: swoopy and stylised, futuristic and fabulous – the very reason a creative embarks on a career in auto design. Unfortunately, their hopes and dreams are usually crushed when the concept is diluted down to the production version – minus the drama – and finished off in appliance white. Thankfully, this was not the fate

of the Toyota C-HR, a car that lost none of its moon-buggy aesthetic in translation from sketch to concept to final masterpiece.

Toyota’s given it a further boost of

concept-car cool with a set of striking two-tone 18” alloy hoops tucked into each arch. It’s also been equipped with a new multimedia touchscreen interface, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto+ integration in Plus models. The upgrade includes full satellite navigation, which makes the 2018 C-HR almost as practical as it is stylish. Underpinning the new features is that familiar TNGA platform still featuring a punchy turbo-charged 1,2 litre 4-cylinder engine to the rorty tune of 85kW and 185Nm mated to a smooth rev-matching iMT manual transmission. The Sport Mode button still resides in this well-appointed cabin and pushing it will engage the more playful nature of both car and driver, while occupants are chilled by virtue of dual-zone climate control, entertained via the myriad of connectivity options and, of course, kept safe by an array of safety acronyms. The 2018 Toyota C-HR, the

conceptual high-riding crossover, loses nothing and gains much with its latest update. If you ask us, it’s just had its reputation as the concept car down right fortified to the nth, and you’d be silly not to own one.
