AFRICAN-STYLE RUM Whistler Rum (R299 per bottle) is

made on a farm along the R70 between Riebeeckstad and Hennenman in the Free State. The makers are Caretus Mzaka and brothers Leon, Stephan and Trevor de Vos. After being in business for less than seven months, Whistler Rum’s already enjoying great success.

WHY “WHISTLER”? We named the rum after the people for whom we made it – the “whistlers”. Men who do things differently and whistle their own tune.

WHY THE FREE STATE? Apart from the fact that the Free State’s real, just like us, and just like Whistler, and besides the fact that all of us are from this area, proud of our roots and wanting to give back to the community, it made financial sense to build the distillery here. Besides, what could be more whistle-your-own-tune-ish than building a rum distillery in the Free State!?

TELL US ABOUT YOUR RUM. We only make rum, because that’s what we do well. We make two types:

Spice-infused: It’s so new and different in SA that the government couldn’t classify it. It’s infused with secret barrel-aged spices, creating softer, mellower flavour notes of cinnamon, vanilla and citrus. It’s loud and extroverted.

53

Dark rum: This is obvious from its rich, golden-brown colour. With deep flavour notes of dark chocolate, toasted toffee and roasted groundnuts, it’s like a sexy, nocturnal pudding, only manlier and more fun to share with people.

HOW DO YOU INFUSE THE RUM WITH SUCH DEPTH OF FLAVOUR? The distillery’s located at an altitude of 1 500m

above sea level, where there are huge temperature swings between day, night, winter and summer. These fluctuations mean the alcohol interacts with the wood in which it’s aged a lot quicker and a lot better. Combine all this with the use of old, used brandy and whiskey barrels, and depth of flavour is the ultimate destination. Available via Takealot and at most major retailers.
