LEHRS FALLS, KWAZULU-NATAL

THE PANORAMA ROUTE

FALLS, MPUMALANGA Head to Mpumalanga to enjoy viewing a clutch of graceful falls – Mac Mac Falls, Lisbon Falls, Sabie Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Berlin Falls, Maria Shires Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Forest Falls – all located on the R532, the fabled Panorama Route. Running between Sabie and

Graskop, the route’s renowned for its significance to SA’s cultural heritage and proximity to many scenic drawcards in the province. In fact, these collectively form a “waterfall tour” of their own. However, if you’re pressed for time, you should at least visit the two most stunning ones among them – Mac Mac Falls and Lisbon Falls. Mac Mac Falls (above), rising 65m,

is located 13km outside Sabie in a family-friendly environment with a picnic spot at the bottom at the Mac Mac Pools, where you can swim in crystal-clear mountain spring water. Visit: www.wild5adventures.co.za

Lisbon Falls, at 92m, is the

highest and most scenic waterfall in Mpumalanga and is located close to God’s Window in Graskop. A picnic is always idyllic near the falls, where bird- lovers can enjoy spotting avian species on the Panorama Route. With Graskop at the centre of many tourist attractions in the area, accommodation is plentiful.

MAGWA FALLS,

EASTERN CAPE (OPPOSITE) The Magwa Falls, on the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast, is in an area that’s already home to a host of impressive attractions. The waterfall lies in the middle of the 1 800ha Magwa tea plantation, the country’s last remaining tea estate just outside Lusikisiki, north of Port St Johns. Rising 142m in height, Magwa Falls is often regarded as a lesser Victoria Falls, in Zambia and Zimbabwe. There’s plenty of accommodation in both Lusikisiki and Port St Johns.

(KZN) (ABOVE) The Lehrs Falls drop 107m into the scenic Oribi Gorge, close to Port Shepstone in southern KZN. One of the province’s most spectacular natural settings, Oribi Gorge is 330m high and is sliced by the Umzimkulu River. Here adrenaline junkies can bungee-jump, abseil or hurtle off the edge, courtesy of the highest swing in the world, which hangs over the gorge. To visit the falls, you can stay in the Oribi area or Port Shepstone.

22 WATERFALLS,

WESTERN CAPE If you want to completely tune out of the world and relax, head to 22 Waterfalls in Porteville, West Coast. Set in a private nature reserve and fed by springs all year round, the 22 Waterfalls are a marvellous sight, with overnight camping and plenty of activities to enjoy in the area, including hiking, fishing and mountain- biking. Should you decide to hike around the falls, you’ll be rewarded by the sight of spectacular indigenous fynbos, indigenous trees and wildlife such as the klipspringer, Cape leopard and rhebok. The reserve is also a twitcher’s paradise. Chalets offer extra accommodation options. Visit: www.22waterfalls.com
