THE ROBERT SMART AWARD Remembering Bob Smart
T
he late Dr. Robert Smart was the first company Secretary General of the European Investment
Casters´ Federation (EICF) for many years, establishing the foundation and operation of the Association. He was also a Director of the British Investment Casting Trade Association (BICTA). He was a pioneer of the study and research of Developments in Powder Metallurgy and Plasma Spraying and made many technical contributions to the Investment Casting foundry technology including his co authoring (with Dr Peter Beeley) of the book of reference for the industry, entitled “Investment Casting”, published in 1995 by the Institute of Materials. In addition, his energy and enthusiasm for all the EICF activities was evident to all who knew him, and he contributed immensely to the international spirit of the organization by organizing many successful international conferences and seminars, and to furthering its aims. The EICF instituted this award, back in 2020 with the idea of preserving the legacy of Dr. Robert Smart to be given to an individual whose contribution to the Investment Casting Foundry Technology satisfies any or some of the following rules:

I. To the inventor or innovator introducing any important or remarkable innovation of different technological
nature applicable
or employed in investment casting foundry practice; or
II. To an investigator whose
research have contributed materially to progress in investment casting foundry practice; or
III. For a paper or study presented at the EICF conferences and seminars and having special merit and importance in connection with investment casting foundry practice; or
IV. To any person whose work as an industrialist or in any other capacity, has contributed in an outstanding manner to the progress of the investment casting foundry industry.
Due to the pandemic the awards corresponding to the years 2020 and 2021 had not been able to be presented, so both awards were presented within one of the plenary sessions of the Santander Conference. The EICF had the privilege of having Mrs Nicola Smart (Bob Smart´s
daughter) presenting the awards. It was a really moving moment for
everybody to see and listen to Nicola speaking about her father precisely at an EICF event. The 2020 award was presented to
the late Dr. Jean François Donchery in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advance of the investment casting industry in Europe. The award was received by Mr. Gregory Donchery which expressed the appreciation of the award received on behalf of the industrial group that supported the activity of Jean François and on behalf of the family too. The 2021 award was presented to
Dr. David Ford in recognition to his researches within the investment casting and their impact into the advance and progress of the technology. Dr. David Ford received himself the
award from Mrs Nicola Smart. Dr. Ford expressed his appreciation for receiving this award and its meaning within the EICF community. Dr. Ford illustrated his appreciation with some stories from the professional development of an engineer and the importance of the investment casting to the advance of the society. With a simple yet emotive
ceremony, the Robert Smart award were delivered after two years from its institution and the legacy of Bob Smart is now permanently linked to the EICF. Remembering Bob Smart.
