NEWS “Ford Motor Company’s commitment to AirVenture
through the last decade has helped EAA create a celebration of flight here in Oshkosh that is unmatched anywhere else in the world,” says EAA President and CEO Tom Poberezny. “The hard work of the Mustang AV-X10 team and Ford’s generosity in donating this beautiful vehicle to the Gather- ing of Eagles is further evidence of the company’s commit- ment to EAA, its members and to aspiring engineers and pilots everywhere.” The name Mustang AV-X10 is trademarked by Ford Mo- tor Company and symbolizes an AirVenture Xperimental project vehicle based on a 2010 Ford Mustang. The “10” designation represents the model year of the Mustang, plus the 10-millionth engine from the Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Mich. The one-of-a-kind, fully-customized vehicle was created by a dedicated Ford team, including Mustang Chief Designer Darrell Behmer, Design Manager George Saridakis and Mustang Chief Nameplate Engineer Dave Pericak, and Senior Designers Robert Gelardi and Garen Nicoghosian. “The response to the Mustang AV-X10 has been remark-
able,” says Edsel B. Ford II, a member of Ford’s Board of Directors. “The Ford team was committed to delivering an extraordinary vehicle to EAA’s Gathering of Eagles to sup- port the education and experiences the Young Eagles make possible for tomorrow’s aviation leaders. We are pleased to see the hard work of the team generate significant funding for this tremendous youth organization.” Blackhawk unveils Caravan engine upgrade at Oshkosh Blackhawk Modifications unveiled the newest member of their family of engine upgrades at EAA in Oshkosh. The 850 SHP Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42A engine delivers new life to the already venerable Grand Caravan by introducing an additional 175 SHP in all phases of flight. Certification is expected in the fourth quarter of 2009. Jim Allmon, President and CEO of Blackhawk Modi- fications, was pleased with the results of this engineering milestone in the certification process for the new PT6A- 42A upgrade. “The takeoff distances are remarkably lower with new climb performance that will exceed an operator’s expectations! This engine is a game-changer for the ‘work- horse’ Caravan – now it’s a powerhouse performer with incredible flexibility.” “Pratt & Whitney’s continuous 850 SHP factory-new
engine says it all in terms of reliability,” Allmon continues. “Blackhawk is proud to have teamed up successfully with Pratt once again.” Director of Engineering Corey Eckhart was enthusiastic after piloting the first test flight. “The performance numbers exceeded our expectations especially when considering the ISA +25 day during the first flight. I can’t wait to see what this engine will do at standard temperatures. As a pilot, it’s a good feeling to know there are greater safety margins across the board with this new engine.” Blackhawk has the largest non OEM engine contract in
