PROFILE How would Hooten describe EAA

AirVenture to a newcomer? “It’s such an awesome event,” he says. “It’s mind boggling in its size and complexity. It’s an aviator’s dream. Go! Spend enough time so you can enjoy it. If

you are an aviation nut like I am, it’s just crazy! I love every minute from the camping to all the aircraft. EAA is a great organization, and AirVenture continues to grow and improve each year.”

THE PILOT/MECHANIC We asked Hooten if he feels having an A&P and pilot’s license has helped him in his aviation career. “I think so,” he says. “It puts you in both sides of the arena. You understand the function of the equipment you are fl ying. You aren’t cold-shocking an engine because you don’t know what’s happening. You understand the theory. I believe employers that see someone who is a pilot and A&P understand the discipline it takes to accomplish that, and it looks good in their eyes.

CLOSING ADVICE We asked Hooten what advice he would give to someone considering pursuing a job in aviation. “My advice to anybody who wants get into aviation is to do whatever it takes to do it — whether it means becoming a mechanic or a pilot,” he says. “There are so many opportunities. Someone could work for a magazine like you do. They could be a manager at a maintenance facility or a supervisor at a manufacturer one day. If you want a cool career, learn how to work on the big drones, because that is getting ready to take off . The bottom line is that we are looking for jobs that we can go to work each day where we smile at the end of the day. We don’t want to go to a job where we are mad when we get off work. Where else can you strap yourself in a 300 hp airplane, fl y through the sky, and leave work happy. Aviation is fantastic! There are multiple opportunities if you are eager and determined. You’re going to need to pay your dues and do some jobs you don’t like and put in some hours you aren’t happy with — but, in the end, aviation is a great career. I’m living proof that aviation is a good opportunity.”
