MARK DUCE lead developer (book team), loveholidays

I’ve been with the company for two years. My role involves working with developers and quality assurance to manage the entire booking process. It’s varied; sometimes it can involve being a technical architect, sometimes it’s more of a quality assurance role. I haven’t got any IT-specific qualifications – I studied French and economics at degree

level – but I’ve been building websites since I was 15. The best thing about working in this industry is that it’s so fast-paced. The market is so quick to react to things that pop up. An example is when one of our rivals went bust. We had an opportunity to acquire its digital rights and we had to react quickly. Being part of a much larger company would have prevented us being able to do so. I’ve taken a different route to most developers, who often rely on tech knowledge first. But I’ve always prided myself on knowing the business. There are so many opportunities to teach yourself – opportunities that weren’t about 10 years ago, such as YouTube videos. My advice for people hoping to get into this line of work would be to set yourself a project, whether it’s building a website, creating some software or writing code.

CAMILLO WEINZ strategic innovation manager, TUI Group

I have a BA in sports management and international business and an MSc in management. The creative aspect of innovation is the easy part of my job. It’s implementing integrated and scalable solutions within a large organisation which can be challenging. But creating innovative customer experiences is what excites me the most. Doing so

requires knowledge of technological, behavioural and societal trends, which essentially allows you to peek into the future. Innovation is about delivery, so much of my day is spent with project and team management. And it’s important to stay up to date with what’s happening in the outside world, so reading news relating to the latest products, developments and customer trends is the first thing I do in the morning. There’s definitely room for progression in my role. In the case of TUI, we’re not just a hotel business: we’re a retailer, e-commerce business, airline and cruise operator. So there are plenty of opportunities. For this kind of job, you need to be curious, delivery-focused and willing to take risks and fail – as long as you learn along the way. The perks? Hearing great feedback from our retail staff.
