Significant numbers of UK holidaymakers now book online, and in a world filled with robot receptionists, chatbots and wearable tech, there’s never been a better time to join the travel tech sector


The travel tech industry is booming. In Europe, more than 200 travel tech businesses attracted £2.5 billion of investment in 2016. And it’s a great time to get involved. According to market research organisation Statista, digital travel sales are set to hit $818 billion by 2020. Travel Technology Europe claims that by the end of 2017, 58% of travel businesses will have increased the amount they spend on technology. The diverse nature of the industry means that there’s a staggeringly wide range of roles available, although anyone considering employment in this


sector should take time to research current trends. For example, more hotels are going all out to convince customers to book online. This is often achieved through ad tech, in-site price checkers, data-informed personalisation and use of social media campaigns. For this reason, companies are increasingly seeking IT employees with a creative streak, and social media skills are seen as a priority. More companies


are also experimenting with cutting-


edge technology – take Virgin Holidays’ in-store use of the Google Cardboard virtual-reality headset, which allows customers to experience destinations before stepping on to the plane. Several tour operators are going down this route, increasing the demand for employees with knowledge of 3D modelling software, C/C++ and graphics programming. Travel companies are


also changing the way in which they interact with customers, relying


on artificial intelligence- powered chatbots and the likes of Facebook Messenger
