Account managers On the operator or supplier side, account managers can also be called sales managers or business development managers. Their job is to sell their company’s product to other travel firms, win new business and make sure sales targets are hit. Account managers usually look after a region and are also responsible for training. In areas such as PR or advertising, managers deal with specific clients.


Associations Most travel firms are a member of an association. The benefits include greater business clout, as the groups typically negotiate with suppliers on behalf of all members, as well as providing support in areas such as marketing and IT. These groups have a code of conduct to which members must adhere. Individual members of the industry working at a senior level can also join a range of networking groups.


Finance/ accountancy Many travel firms are small businesses that need accountants for business planning. Accountants provide advice when travel firms are being bought or sold. Many companies make a lot more money in the summer, so need help managing their cashflow throughout the year. Accountants advise on many other issues such as having bonding in place and complying with laws such as tax and VAT.


Global distribution systems GDSs are the technology platform that suppliers such as airlines, hotels and car rental firms use to distribute their products, so agents can book them. Roles include technology development and account management for clients.


Health and safety This job assesses whether aspects of a holiday are safe and don’t put customers at risk.


Health and safety staff make checks and keep records, and suggest improvements. They also train employees and report on incidents.


IT Back-office IT work involves managing a company’s data, so that users have a smooth experience and the business gathers all the information it needs to operate successfully. This could be information about hotels, capturing data so the company complies with legislation, or measuring how the business is performing and who is booking what.


Legal Travel companies employ an in-house lawyer or specialist law firms to advise them on the legal requirements relating to selling package holidays and the licences needed. They also produce suppliers contracts and booking conditions. In addition, customers sometimes make claims against companies and both sides need legal representation.
