Short-Haul
Greece and Turkey led the short-haul recovery for the peak summer period, while sustainability and staycations also shone this year
Short-haul operators started this year on a high with a strong set of peaks marketing campaigns, their enthusiasm seemingly undimmed by the omicron variant. Tui told us to ‘live happy’, Jet2holidays proclaimed ‘holidays are go’, while On the Beach had us humming ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ long after Christmas was over. Meanwhile, easyJet holidays ramped up its agent
profile with its first trade brochure in print, a pledge to host more than 100 agents on fam trips this year and a massive £16,000 in incentives and agency rewards. Skiers gave France a swerve thanks to Covid
restrictions on leisure travel, but many switched their sights to Austria, Switzerland and Italy for their first ski breaks since the pandemic.
EUROPEAN HOTSPOTS Flights restarted to popular short-haul spots including Rome, Barcelona and Paphos, but the huge boost in
capacity for Greece and Turkey really led the recovery.
Jet2.com added half-a-million seats to the former over summer, an 86% jump compared with 2019, while Turkish carriers Corendon Airlines, Sun Express and Freebird Airlines added services to Antalya, Dalaman and Bodrum from Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. ForwardKeys analysis later revealed they were the
only two destinations to recover above pre-pandemic levels over the peak summer period, with Greece up 2% and Turkey up 9% on 2019. There were wins for other short-haul destinations
too, as last-minute bookings and lingering restrictions on long-haul travel continued to shape demand. Jet2 announced its biggest-ever Iceland programme and more shoulder-season services to Malta, while easyJet added twice-weekly flights to Krk in Croatia. Sister brands Citalia and Sovereign chose to shine a light on lesser- visited destinations including Umbria and Ischia in Italy, Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands and Rovinj in Croatia.
