The year started with a bumpy ride before the real rollercoasters stole the limelight, with a host of openings at the world’s best theme parks
The rollercoaster of travel rules and regulations was back in full swing in January, as lingering waves of the Omicron variant prompted a return to testing in the UK and restrictions on British travellers in popular destinations including France, Spain and Cyprus. The ride was mercifully brief, however. Pre-arrival
testing was dropped almost before the bells of the new year had finished ringing, and all tests axed for vaccinated travellers by the end of the month. That came too late to save February half-term, with
many families having swapped Spain or France for other holiday hotspots, but the trade hailed the move as a ‘landmark’ moment in rebuilding consumer confidence. The real rollercoasters were back up and running too,
in a year of big anniversary celebrations for some of the world’s best-known theme parks and attractions. Disneyland Paris marked its 30th birthday in March with new Marvel attraction Avengers Campus at Walt
Disney Studios Park and a night-time show featuring nearly 200 drones spelling out the big 3-0 in the sky. Its Florida counterpart, Walt Disney World Resort
in Orlando, is highlighting its 50th anniversary with a super-sized 18-month celebration, while Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld also unveiled new projects including the latter’s Ice Breaker coaster.
PIGS AND POPSTARS Elsewhere in the Sunshine State, Legoland Florida Resort welcomed a new Peppa Pig park. Children’s characters came out to play in the Netherlands as well, where theme park Efteling added an Alice in Wonderland attraction to mark its 70th anniversary in March. There were plenty more reasons to celebrate in
the hotel sector, not least if you were lucky enough to nab a spot at one of Iberostar Hotels & Resorts’ live music breaks in Majorca, in conjunction with
