followed by Virgin Atlantic and British Airways for US flights from April. The EU removed its mask mandate in May, just as the summer season was taking off. The transatlantic market continued to dominate, with

new low-cost players on the scene and established carriers getting back up to full capacity. Virgin Atlantic began operating its first new route to

the US since 2015, to Austin, Texas, along with a new Edinburgh-Orlando service. March was the first time the airline had resumed its full US destination network, with routes to Seattle and Washington DC completing the picture. Air Canada also restarted UK and Ireland routes to operate its biggest-ever summer schedule.

NEW ROUTES

JetBlue extended its Heathrow-JFK route and added a Boston flight from Gatwick, and later won a battle to acquire US carrier Spirit Airlines in a $3.8 billion deal to create the fifth-biggest airline in the US. Low-cost Nordic airline Play put flights from Stansted to New York Stewart International (via Reykjavik) from June on sale from just £159, while no-frills carrier Norse Atlantic Airways received approval to start transatlantic services using Norwegian’s former fleet of Dreamliners. Aer Lingus announced a repeat of its Manchester- Barbados winter route from November, while Singapore Airlines resumed its full schedule of flights from Heathrow to the country’s Changi airport from June.

Local challenges, such as the closure of Doncaster

Sheffield airport, and global issues, including climate change, the price of jet fuel and the conflict in Ukraine, mean the outlook remains somewhat uncertain, but the aviation sector has shown it can weather storms.
