Gary Barlow is P&O Cruises’ latest brand ambassador

P&O lines up Gary Barlow for Iona’s naming ceremony

Pop legend Gary Barlow is to perform at the naming ceremony of new P&O Cruises ship Iona this summer and on two of its sailings. The Take That star, who was

announced as the line’s latest brand ambassador last week, is to appear at the star-studded ceremony on July 4 alongside DJ and broadcaster Trevor Nelson, radio and TV presenter Jo Whiley, comedian Chris Ramsey and radio presenter Sara Cox. Barlow, who has been to see the 5,200-passenger vessel at the shipyard in Germany where it is being built, performed at a launch event in London last week. In a Q&A session, he said:

“[P&O] did this thing where they said ‘we want to film your reaction when you see the ship’.” Guests were then shown footage

of Barlow laying eyes on the vessel for the first time, after which he played a short set which ended with Take That hit Rule the World. “I am a small part in the

development of this particular travelweekly.co.uk I am a small part

in the development of this ship. I cannot wait to get on board

ship,” added Barlow. “I cannot wait to get on board.” As well as performing at Iona’s

naming ceremony on July 4, for which P&O Cruises is giving away 1,000 places, Barlow will join two of the ship’s sailings from Southampton, departing on August 29 and October 31. In his role as musical director

of the ship’s The 710 Club, Barlow will help pick some of the musical talent that will perform on Iona. “Even though there is so much

music around, I do believe the artists that stand out are the ones who can pick up a guitar or play a piano,” he said in a nod to his plans. It is understood P&O Cruises

president Paul Ludlow and Barlow have mutual friends, which led to discussions about the musician becoming a brand ambassador. pocruises.com
