The coronavirus poses serious risks, but several pieces of news gave cause for cautious optimism as Travel Weekly went to press. Japanese health authorities announced that passengers quarantined


aboard Diamond Princess could leave the ship, ending what had become an ordeal, and the Foreign Office confirmed it was working to repatriate UK passengers. Hopefully, this will end the unfortunate entwinement of the ship and its stranded passengers with the epidemic. At the same time, figures from China suggested the outbreak might have peaked, with the number of new cases declining in recent days. Beyond China, it remains too soon to tell whether the virus can be contained. But in the UK, more than 4,500 people had been tested by early this week, of whom nine had tested positive. While the epidemic


continues to affect operators to and from China and cruise bookings to Asia, the overall outbound market appears to be holding up (page 5). It remains too early to know if this will continue, but it’s a reassuring sign while we hope the virus can be prevented from turning into a pandemic. None of this is to diminish the seriousness of an outbreak that by Tuesday had resulted in


73,000 confirmed infections and almost 1,900 deaths. Nor is it to diminish the concerns of travellers or of difficulties facing businesses dealing with the fallout. The industry needs to continue what it is doing – disseminating accurate information, displaying flexibility and acting cooperatively.
