Destination NSW and Qantas are teaming up on a trade promotion. We find out how they’ll be working with agents and what’s new for those travelling to Sydney and New South Wales

Q.What are you focusing on in marketing New South Wales to the UK trade? Sydney is the gateway into Australia for UK visitors, so we encourage travellers to enjoy our beautiful harbour city, but also to explore regional New South
Wales and enjoy the diversity of experiences on offer. Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood and glamping along the NSW south coast, visit the Hunter Valley’s acclaimed wineries and restaurants, and embrace the surf lifestyle in Byron Bay.
Q.What are your plans for working with agents over the next year? Engagement with travel agents is an important aspect of our UK activities. We have a trade-focused Facebook page (
facebook.com/destinationnswtrade) for updates on training events, product news, fam trip opportunities and incentives. Agents can register for the Aussie Specialist Program (
aussiespecialist.com) to find a range of NSW training tools and sales resources. Agents can also meet NSW suppliers at the Destination NSW UK & Europe Roadshow in March.
Q. After the recent bushfires in Australia, what information can agents relay to their customers? Although bushfires have affected some of the state’s most popular destinations, thankfully information direct from the regions reassures us that the majority of the state remains open for business and ready to receive visitors. Our coastline, outback towns and charming regional centres are welcoming tourists, as is the iconic Harbour City of Sydney. As NSW’s courageous and resilient communities focus on regeneration, travellers have a pivotal role to play in their recovery. Booking a holiday in regional NSW now will have a real impact on the communities that need support the most.

Q. How is Qantas planning on working with UK travel agents over the next year? We’ll be embedding our new service request automation which launched in December on Qantas Agency Connect and means agents
are more empowered to self-serve with things like schedule changes, class upgrades and more. We’ll also see the evolution of the Qantas Distribution Platform. Not forgetting we’re celebrating our Centenary year too – we look forward to celebrating with our trade partners.
Q.What is Qantas doing to be as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible? We’ve announced that by 2050 we’ll reach net zero carbon emissions, including an immediate doubling of flights being offset and capping our emissions at 2020 levels. We’re also committed to cutting our waste to landfill by 75% by the end of 2021, including removing more than 100 million single-use plastics from flights and lounges and we’re proud to have flown the world’s first zero-waste flight in May.
Q What are Qantas’s latest innovations and future priorities? We’ve been doing a lot of work on the exciting possibility of ultra long- haul flying and recently ran research flights for Project Sunrise, flying direct from London and New York to Sydney. Part of that research was passenger wellness. We’ve worked with the Charles Perkins Institute at the University of Sydney for several years on the impacts of long-haul flying and this feeds into all areas of our product and passenger experience.
