Intrepid adds 18-29 range and scraps Geckos brand

Juliet Dennis juliet.dennis@travelweekly.co.uk

Intrepid Travel is introducing trips for 18-29-year-olds and ditching its direct-sell Geckos Adventures brand.

All Geckos Adventures product – sold mainly in Australia and not widely known in the UK – will be merged into the new trade-friendly range under the Intrepid brand. The operator says the move

is to tap into growing demand for sustainable, immersive local experiences among millennials. Geckos Adventures, established

20 years ago and part of the Intrepid Group since 2013 as a competitor to its Basix range, will be dropped in October. An 18-29s brochure of youth itineraries will be produced later this year, with product ranging from camping in Iceland to surfing in Morocco. Intrepid is expanding the range

with 20% more departures and is adding Iceland and Russia for 2019. It will be priced at the same

TOUBKAL: Intrepid offers three trips to Morocco that visit the mountain

level as Intrepid’s Basix range and provide a “stress-free alternative” to backpacking and big bus tours for “socially-conscious millennials”, said group chief executive James Thornton. He cited Intrepid’s larger

customer base for the decision to launch the range under its brand rather than expand Geckos. The operator reported a 15%

increase in UK departures last year from the 18-29 age group. One of Intrepid’s six planned 2019 fam trips will focus on the

18-29 range and it will hold webinars to help agents learn more. Thornton said: “Intrepid has

four times the number of travellers aged 18 to 29 as Geckos. It’s a global brand, whereas Geckos is almost entirely sold in Australia. “Focusing on the power of our

brand in the youth market is a way we can invest in sustainable travel for the long-term.” Intrepid will make a donation to social enterprise Friends-International

for every 18-29s trip booked. intrepidtravel.com
