Story: Ryanair slams ‘tourism destroying Amsterdam’ claim Sorry, Kenny [Jacobs, Ryanair chief marketing officer], Frans van der Avert [Amsterdam Marketing chief executive] is spot on. Amsterdam is certainly not the only destination that has been vandalised by mass tourism. Respect is a two-way street, and the loud mobs Frans is talking about show no respect. It’s a a bit rich for Ryanair to engage in class warfare. ‘Better value’ is apparently Ryanair-speak for ‘cheap’, which is what they want to be all about.

Laptop proposal is scaremongering


Story: EU demands urgent talks as US considers laptop ban extension Two thoughts as to why this sounds more like scaremongering than reality. First, why would a suicide bomber place a laptop bomb in his hand luggage when it would be easier and less likely to be detected if placed in the hold? Second, the airlines that will suffer most if such a ban comes in will be US-owned and the last thing Donald Trump wants to do is handicap US-owned businesses more than non-US-owned businesses. However, if this is a response to genuine intelligence that so-called Islamic State is indeed close to developing a way to put a powerful bomb in consumer electronics, all flights everywhere would need to ban consumer electronics, including domestic flights. If the ban were only on international flights, IS would just get its followers who are already based in the west to bomb a domestic flight. DAVID TARSH
