1. Discover the heritage of the Berbers

Desert Adventures 5

Nothing beats the powerful emotional experience of visiting the desert. In Tunisia it is easily accessible by taking a two-day Sahara excursion and staying overnight in a desert inn or camp

Reasons why you should visit the Tunisian Sahara

The Berbers are the original inhabitants of Tunisia and the desert is their home. Marvel at their incredible villages, carved from the rocky crags to which they cling, and troglodyte dwellings. The sands are punctuated by the strange-looking ksours, the fortified grain stores built to stock their scarce supplies of food.

2. Immerse yourself in the oasis of Tozeur

Visit Tozeur, a desert city and location of one of the most picturesque oases. Here visitors can take long walks through the

hundreds of thousands of palm trees, and wander amazed along the alleyways of the old medina between the pale-brick facades of its houses and villas.

3. Follow in the footsteps of Luke Skywalker!

Just 30 minutes away from Tozeur is the well-preserved film set of Star Wars (pictured)! It’s little wonder that the vast, otherworldly landscapes of the Tunisian Sahara have been the setting for films such as The English Patient, Life of Brian and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

4. Enjoy desert thrills! For thrill-seekers in search of

a more dramatic adventure, the desert is also the location for some big rallies – where motorcyclists and automobilists take on the challenge of the wide open spaces – and a range of extreme sports. These include sand skiing on undulating dunes and rocky tracks, quad biking, mountain biking and hang-gliding.

5. Experience music in the desert!

The Sahara is the magnificent backdrop for some of Tunisia’s most popular festivals, such as the International Festival of the Sahara. Visitors can expect an unforgettable experience!
